DL-phenylalanine inhibits the degradation of endorphins and enkephalins by enzymatic inhibition. Endorphins and enkephalins are neuroactive substances that bind to opiate receptor sites in the brain and affect pain perception. This may be particularly helpful to people who have withdrawn from opiates. Phenylalanine prolongs the life of endorphins and enkephalins and their positive influence on discomfort levels after drug withdrawal. DL-phenylalanine may increase phenylethylamine in the brain. DL-phenylalanine can be converted to phenylethylamine, which may elevate mood, decrease depression, and decrease pain.
Patients with phenylketonuria (PKU) should not take Passages Replenishment Extreme. PKU is a genetic disorder condition usually diagnosed in childhood causing an inability to utilize the essential amino acid phenylalanine.
N-acetyl-L-tyrosine is metabolized to L-tyrosine, which is a precursor to dopamine and norepinephrine and epinephrine neurotransmitters. All three of these neurotransmitters are essential for excitation, or energy. Dopamine is biosynthesized in the body by nerve tissue and in the adrenal glands from L-tyrosine.
N-acetyl L eysteine, or NAC, helps the body produce glutathione. Glutathione is considered to body's most important antioxidant because of its ability to neutralize free radicals and detoxify. It is an essential part of the liver's ability to detoxify our bodies. Glutathione is also part of the shielding function of the liver and protects it from harmful effects after exposure to a number of toxic chemicals, including those chemicals that can poison the body through cumulative use such as addictive drugs.
Mueuna puriens (25% L-dopa) comes from the velvet bean has been used by indigenous peoples in South Africa as a nerve tonic for nervous system disorders. Due to the high concentration of L-dopa in the seeds or beans, mucuna has been studied for its possible use in Parkinson's disease. Parkinson's is a degenerative nervous disorder with progressive degeneration of neurons specific for dopamine in certain areas in the brain. Dopamine does not cross the blood-brain barrier and therefore cannot be used directly as a treatment. However, L-dopa (levodopa) crosses the blood-brain barrier into the brain, where it can be converted to dopamine. Mucuna puriens has been used for many indications, including to relieve pain, reduce inflammation, lower cholesterol, control blood sugar, and, most importantly, balance the nervous system, calm nerves, and restore energy.
